The Ken River: An Ecological Lifeline

Rising in the Vindhya Range, the Ken River flows northward for around 427 km before joining the Yamuna. Through its passage across the Panna plateau it sustains one of India's most intact riverine ecosystems, providing water, food, and shelter for a remarkable array of wildlife.

For guests of Nature's Lap Resort, the Ken River is not just a view — it is a living attraction on the doorstep. The Madla ghat, the main boat point, is just minutes from the resort and offers easy access to the river's many pleasures.

Boating & Coracle Rides

One of the most popular activities for resort guests is a boat ride on the Ken River. Traditional wooden boats and coracles — round wicker craft — are available at the Madla ghat. Drifting quietly on the river at dawn or dusk, with the Panna forest on both banks, is an experience that stays with visitors long after they leave.

Evening boat rides are particularly magical: the setting sun paints the water gold, birds return to roost along the banks, and the sounds of the forest carry clearly across the water. The resort can arrange rides for guests on request.

Gharial Spotting on the Ken

The Ken River is one of India's most important sanctuaries for the gharial (Gavialis gangeticus), a critically endangered fish-eating crocodilian distinguished by its long, narrow snout. Once pushed to the brink of extinction, the gharial has made a slow comeback on protected river stretches like the Ken, and patient observers can spot them basking on sandy banks during the cooler months.

The Ken Gharial Sanctuary protects a key breeding stretch of the river, and sightings are most reliable from November to March when water levels are lower and gharials spend more time on the banks. Mugger crocodiles and smooth-coated otters also inhabit the river and can often be seen from a quiet boat.

Bird Watching Along the Banks

The Ken River corridor is outstanding for bird watching. Kingfishers — including the common, pied, and stork-billed varieties — are abundant and easily spotted flashing between riverbank perches. Grey herons, purple herons, and painted storks wade the shallows. Indian skimmers glide low over the water surface at certain points, and ospreys hunt overhead.

The forested banks of the Panna Tiger Reserve add forest birds — Indian rollers, bee-eaters, paradise flycatchers, and numerous warblers — making a riverside walk or boat ride a rewarding birding excursion at any time of day.

Riverside Walks & Sunsets

The Ken River offers some of the most serene walking experiences in the region. Evening strolls along the Madla ghat as the sun sets over the water are a favourite for resort guests seeking quiet and calm. The play of light on the river, the calls of night herons beginning their evening activity, and the silhouettes of the forest combine to create an atmosphere of complete peace.

Nature's Lap Resort, being just 1 km from the river and situated on the Khajuraho–Panna highway, is the ideal base for making the most of Ken River's many dimensions — whether a pre-dawn boat ride, a mid-morning bird walk, or a lazy sunset vigil from the ghat.
